It smells like coffee and rain, with hints of fall leaves. My backpack is still heavy and my throat kind of hurts. I'm hungry for Chinese food and overwhelmed with work and school. Today is like all of the other days.
Only it is not.
Today is a day we are supposed to remember. Remember the heartache and tears. Remember the people who risked their lives. The people who lost their lives. And the people who love people who lost their lives. In a way, we all lost something that day. Some losses were much greater than others. Some losses cannot be put to rest. And should not be put to rest. We lost our sense of safety. Our sense of the invincible American. Yet, we gained a sense of community.
I'm sure you all remember where you were and your reaction on this day, and I know none of us will ever forget.
My heart goes out to those of you who lost loved ones. To those of you who lost loved ones of loved ones. To those of you who stood at the bottom to catch strangers. To the men and women who were going to go home and eat dinner that night. Maybe feed their cats. You are all beautiful. You are all heroes. You will never be forgotten, even tonight, when I eat my Chinese food, I will eat it in remembrance of you.
